5 Card Games to Play with Friends

Have you ever gathered your friends together and, when it came time to pick a game, everyone just stared at each other, undecided?
Or maybe you’re planning a game night but haven’t chosen which games to play yet?
Or perhaps you’re that one friend who’s insanely good at games — memorizing every card, mapping out strategies, and mastering every move thanks to countless game nights?

One of the best ways to spend time with friends is by playing a good game — and often, a simple deck of cards becomes the group’s best ally.
Card Games aren’t just a classic source of fun — they can also be powerful educational tools! That’s right — you can learn while playing!

Developing specific skills like logical reasoning, strategic thinking, and even boosting social interaction — it’s all possible through card games.

Did you know that carrying out game mechanics, sharing experiences in multiplayer sessions, and building numerical predictions can actually boost your cognitive development?
Studies show that knowledge can be built in a playful way when language is simplified and connected to the players’ interests.

But let’s get to the good part, shall we?

Check out these awesome Card Games we’ve picked out for you:

1. Magic: The Gathering

Magic: The Gathering — or just “Magic” for those who know it well — is one of the oldest trading card games (TCGs) in geek culture, renowned for its breathtaking artwork and insanely valuable cards.

It offers a very interesting concept: each player builds their own deck while collecting various cards.
You can buy pre-constructed decks or take a gamble by opening booster packs containing 15 random cards, gradually shaping your collection over time.

This card game is set in an enchanted multiverse, where each area is represented by a specific color.
Duels between players follow some basic rules, involving the limited use of different types of cards like creatures, spells, lands, and artifacts.

In a very simplified way:
You have a set number of cards in your deck and a certain amount of life points.
You draw seven cards to start, play your cards according to the rules during your turn, attack your opponent, and then wait for your next turn (which happens after your opponent finishes their move).
At the beginning of each round, you draw a new card from your deck.

It’s a game that demands strategy, patience, and lots of thinking.
Definitely a must-try experience with your friends!

2. UNO

If you’ve never gotten stressed out while playing UNO with friends, you’re playing it wrong! 😅
UNO is a very simple card game that brings together family and friends — and sometimes, shakes those friendships a little too.
With its easy-to-understand dynamics and basic rules, UNO can rescue any group of friends from boredom.

The goal is simple:
To win a round of UNO, you must be the first player to get rid of all your cards.
You do this by playing one card at a time, matching either the number or the color of the card previously played.
When you have only one card left in your hand, you must shout “UNO“!
But beware of that tricky card: the dreaded +4!

Ah yes, the cause of many ruined victories…
Who hasn’t been just one step away from winning, only to get hit by a +4 and watch their dreams fall apart?
When you receive a +4, you’re forced to draw four new cards — unless you have your own +4 card to throw back at the next player, passing the pain along!

3. Truco

This classic card game couldn’t be left out, right?
So gather your friends, deal the cards, and get ready to shout “TRUUUUUCOOOOO” at the top of your lungs!

In Brazil, each region has its own set of rules for this super popular game, with the most well-known variations being Truco Paulista and Truco Mineiro.

Truco Paulista (also called “higher point”):

  • Played with 4 players, divided into teams of two.
  • Uses 40 cards (cards 8, 9, 10, and jokers are removed).
  • Each player is dealt 3 random cards.
  • In each round, players play one card at a time — the strongest card wins the round.

On top of the basic card hierarchy, the game introduces the Manilhas, the most powerful cards.
Manilhas are determined when shuffling: after shuffling, the dealer flips over the first card — the value shown defines the manilhas for that turn.

And of course, there’s the famous “Truco” shout — a strategy to raise the stakes during a round.
You either accept the challenge or fold!
The match is played until one team reaches 12 points — the first team to get there wins!

Truco Mineiro:
This variation only differs from Truco Paulista in the card hierarchy, where the card values are predefined — but the general rules remain the same.

4. Top Trumps

Did you ever play Top Trumps as a kid?
This nostalgic game comes in many different themes, making it perfect for both passing the time and educational purposes, as the cards contain useful information depending on the chosen theme.

The premise is simple but packed with content that sparks curiosity:
Each card features a character or subject, with various attributes that players use to compare against each other to determine which card is superior.

The card with the better characteristics wins the round, while the “Super Trunfo” (the “Top Trump”) card is unbeatable!
There are tons of themes to choose from — cartoons, countries, vehicles, animals — so if I were you, I wouldn’t miss out!

5. Yu-Gi-Oh!

It’s time to duel!
If, like me, you watched TV before heading to school, I’m sure you’ve heard of this show…

Yu-Gi-Oh! is a card game inspired by the Japanese anime that first hit TV screens in the early 2000s.
The story follows Yugi Muto, a young boy who, once he connected with the “heart of the cards,” became unstoppable.

But back to the point — have you ever actually played Yu-Gi-Oh!?
It’s a trading card game (TCG) where your deck faces off against others.
The game features creature cards, spells, and various surprises at every turn.
Its mechanics are somewhat similar to Magic: The Gathering, but of course, it comes with its own unique and exciting twists.

There’s also a classic version of Yu-Gi-Oh! that everyone knows — the card flipping battles!
Did you ever battle cards at school or on the street with your neighbors and friends, flipping them over with a quick flick of the wrist?
So much nostalgia!
