Four Incredible Crossovers Between Marvel and DC

In the geek world, there’s a constant debate about which superhero universe stands out more — yes, we’re talking about Marvel and DC.
I’m sure you, fellow nerd, have participated in many heated discussions involving these two universes, right?
With that in mind, we’ve selected some epic comic books to celebrate the incredible times when these heroes crossed over.
Check it out:

1. Spider-Man & Batman

In September 1997, publisher Abril brought to Brazil a comic book written by J.M. DeMatteis, starring two heavyweight protagonists: our beloved Web-Slinger (Marvel) and the Billionaire Bat (DC).
In a storyline packed with action and adventure, two universes collide in a dramatic fashion.
True to comic book traditions, both heroes face off against their respective arch-enemies, Carnage and the Joker, who also form a rather curious alliance.

The creation of a villain duo that contrasts their divergent philosophies — using very different methods of spreading chaos — makes for an engaging plot, perfect for bringing Spider-Man and Batman together.
Mark Bagley’s illustrations are impeccable, with vibrant colors and dynamic lines that add even more flair to the edition.
Beyond that, the crossover weaves together writing and artwork in a way that explores new perspectives on both characters, creating a truly fantastic experience.

The First Encounter You Never Forget…

The first meeting between these superheroes happens during a battle against Carnage, in a rather unexpected moment in the comics.
Scientists had developed a technology in the form of a chip implanted in the supervillains Joker and Carnage, hoping to control their evil impulses — but, of course, it didn’t work.
Carnage reverted to his natural chaotic self and caused major destruction, prompting our heroes to jump into action.

But it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows — Batman wasn’t exactly welcoming when he spotted Spider-Man in Gotham.

In a brief exchange, Batman questioned Spider-Man about his presence in the city.
The Web-Slinger responded by saying he wanted to help in the hunt for Carnage and the Joker, who had escaped after the first battle.

Naturally, our heroes eventually come to an understanding (well, as much as they can) and form an unusual partnership to take down their iconic foes.

2. Hulk vs. Superman

You weren’t expecting this one, were you? 😎
So, the big question is: who’s stronger — The Incredible Hulk or Superman?
This was an incredible battle that put the strength of our beloved comic book heroes to the ultimate test, packed with enough smashing and brawling to keep us glued to every panel of this super storyline.

This special edition stays true to the core concepts of both characters — for example, we see a super-violent and aggressive Hulk, illustrated with a rugged, square-jawed look.
With lots of twists along the way, Hulk vs. Superman presents a rather unique plot, where not only do the two heroes clash, but they also end up fighting Lex Luthor, Superman’s longtime nemesis.

Hmmm, and what about hunger?

At one point, Hulk, overwhelmed by hunger, causes seismic tremors as he desperately searches for a restaurant to devour some food.
Sensing the disturbances, Superman, already on high alert, heads out to investigate the source of the quakes.

Upon seeing Hulk, Superman — with a hint of sarcasm — questions Hulk’s manners.
But the Green Goliath isn’t one for chit-chat. Without hesitation, he launches into an all-out attack, kicking off their first big showdown in the comic!

3. X-Men and the New Teen Titans

Is it possible for two young and energetic teams to come together in a single comic book?
Yes, that’s exactly what happened… DC and Marvel nailed it with the synergy between the X-Men and the Teen Titans, successfully aligning similar traits between the characters — which greatly excited fans and delivered thrilling battles against villains like Darkseid and Dark Phoenix.

Published in 1982, this comic book managed to please fans of both franchises in a single serving.
The fluidity of the story’s progression is a major highlight here, making the team-up feel “natural” rather than forced.

We’re used to seeing superhero cooperation being the main highlight in crossovers, but in this edition, the quality of the villain development across two universes is absolutely spine-chilling.
The scene where Darkseid extends his hand after summoning Dark Phoenix is breathtaking — and from that moment, the rest is history.

It’s a classic scene of a partnership that worked perfectly.
With multiple layers of irony and tension, this moment becomes iconic.
We see Wolverine, with his signature sarcasm, getting under the skin of the young Titans.
Meanwhile, Storm is contemplating a little flirting, and finally, Robin and Cyclops seal the alliance with a perfectly crafted dynamic that’s an absolute joy to read.

4. Justice League & Avengers

One of the greatest crossovers in comic book history actually happened — and you might not even know it.
No, it’s not fake news!
These two legendary teams have already met and joined forces in a breath-taking, four-part crossover!

Of course, behind the scenes, there were a lot of complicated negotiations between Marvel Comics and DC Comics to make it happen.
But all the challenges were worth it in the end — the result was a splendid and unforgettable narrative.

The story was written by Kurt Busiek and illustrated by George Pérez, making it one of the most celebrated crossovers in the history of both universes (Marvel and DC).
The comic features nearly every major character from both sides and was finally released in Brazil in 2004, published by Panini Comics.

In this storyline, the Justice League faces off against Terminus (from Marvel), while the Avengers take on Starro (from DC).
As parallel realities collide, the battles and tensions escalate — with each team determined to save their own world no matter the cost!
