Friends cast reunites 17 years later!

What’s up, Nerd Stickers family! Chaene Da Gama here once again.

I have to admit, this one took a while to come out! As always, I hope you’re all doing well, surrounded by the people you love.

Today, we’re going to talk about a show that I really like—actually, a sitcom.

Sitcom? What’s that, dude? Hold on, I’ll explain it to you, “young one.” 😆

Sitcom is the term used to describe TV series based on humor. The word is short for Situation Comedy, which, when translated, means Comedy Situations. See how I’m fluent in English, bro? 😎

These shows usually don’t have an elaborate storyline. Instead, they focus on the everyday lives of characters who experience relatable situations—just like any of us. Another key element is the laugh track, which makes it sound like a live audience is watching and reacting to every joke (on average, sitcoms aim for three jokes per minute). But don’t be fooled! Many times, the audience is actually there, watching it live! I bet you didn’t know that!

For example, an episode that lasts 20 to 22 minutes can take 6 to 8 hours to film.

The first sitcom I ever watched was Friends—yes, I’ve been watching it since the ‘90s! The show first aired on September 22, 1994, on the NBC network in the U.S. It only made its way to Brazil on February 4, 1996, where it was broadcast on Sony Channel (for those who had cable TV). The first open TV channel to show the sitcom in Brazil was RedeTV.

If you started watching it early, like me, but didn’t have cable TV, you had to buy VHS tapes, rent them from video stores, or—like I did—ask a friend with cable TV and a good VCR to record the episodes every week. Stonks! 😂

Later, Friends was also aired on SBT and for many years on the Warner Channel (cable TV).

A Summary of Friends

Friends follows the lives of six single friends living in New York, exploring their relationships, jobs, and everyday interactions that anyone in their age group can relate to. The main setting is the apartment of Monica Geller, a restaurant chef. The story kicks off when her old high school friend, Rachel Green, runs away from her wedding and decides to move in with her. Upon arriving in New York, she meets her new neighbors: Joey Tribbiani, an aspiring actor, and Chandler Bing, who works in data processing (though no one ever remembers exactly what he does). Phoebe Buffay, who used to live with Monica, now stays with her grandmother and works as a masseuse and part-time singer.

Another key character is Ross Geller, Monica’s brother and a paleontologist. The series begins with Ross going through a divorce, as his ex-wife has left him for another woman. However, she later discovers that she is pregnant with Ross’s child.

A major storyline in the show revolves around Ross’s lifelong love for Rachel, which is rekindled when they reunite. Their on-again, off-again relationship becomes one of the central plots throughout the 10 seasons of the series.

As the story unfolds, we see major life changes for Rachel and Ross, the core couple of the show, as well as new characters and guest stars who appear throughout the ten-year run.

A Pop Culture Phenomenon

Regarded by many critics as a pop culture phenomenon, Friends went beyond just being a sitcom—it redefined the format and reached iconic status. Fans continue to binge-watch it multiple times, making it the subject of studies and articles. The show’s impressive ratings prove its massive popularity, both during its original run and long after its finale.

📺 During its time on Netflix (2014–2020), Friends was one of the most binge-watched series worldwide.
📺 On American television, it averaged 50 million viewers per week.
🏆 It was nominated for numerous awards and won many of them.

As the show became a massive hit, the six main actors began earning $1 million per episode in the later seasons—yes, $1 million per episode, with all six receiving equal pay and appearing in every single episode. Considering each season had 23 to 24 episodes, that paycheck was no joke!

The Reunion – 17 Years Later

Seventeen years after Friends ended, the cast reunited for a special episode on HBO Max, the platform where the series is currently available. In the U.S., Friends remains the most-watched show on the streaming service.

Each cast member reportedly earned a $2.5 million paycheck for their participation in the special. While details about the reunion were initially kept under wraps, it was expected to bring the six actors together for a conversation about the show’s best moments.

So, have you watched Friends yet? Let me know! Below, I’ll share a brief introduction and iconic moments from each character. 😊

Ross Geller

Played by David Schwimmer, Ross Geller is Monica’s older brother. A paleontologist, he works at the New York Museum of Natural History. Throughout the series, he has two children: Ben, his firstborn from his marriage with Carol, who left him for Susan before Ben was even born, and later Emma, his daughter with Rachel.

Ross is extremely intelligent and takes great pride in his PhD, but he is also immature and sometimes overly pessimistic. However, he is a generous and kind-hearted guy, often putting others’ happiness before his own.

Throughout the 10 seasons, he goes through three divorces and remains eternally in love with Rachel, his high school crush. They date, have a daughter together, but constantly break up for various reasons. Their on-again, off-again relationship is one of the show’s defining elements.

And just for the record—I also think they were on a break! 😆

Monica Geller

Courteney Cox plays the egocentric and perfectionist Monica Geller. Passionate about cleaning and cooking, she becomes a chef and works at various restaurants. She inherits her grandmother’s apartment, where all the characters live at some point.

Monica has always been overshadowed by Ross, who seems to be the parents’ favorite. She dreams of getting married and having kids and surprises everyone when she starts dating Chandler, whom she later marries.

Chandler Bing

Chandler Muriel Bing, played by Matthew Perry, comes from a complicated family. His parents divorced when he was young—his father ran off with one of their house servants and became a drag performer in a Las Vegas nightclub, while his mother is a famous erotic novelist. Because of his childhood traumas, Chandler uses humor as a defense mechanism, cracking jokes all the time.

He met Ross in college but spent years sharing an apartment with Joey, his best friend. Eventually, he marries Monica and becomes one of the most beloved characters in the series.

Phoebe Buffay

Phoebe Buffay, played by Lisa Kudrow, is one of the show’s funniest characters. She has a twin sister, Ursula, and both were abandoned by their biological parents. After her adoptive mother died by suicide, Phoebe was left to fend for herself, taking on odd jobs to survive.

She is a hippie with a strong spiritual side, always trying to cleanse her friends’ auras.

Despite her tragic backstory, Phoebe is one of the most lovable characters. She works as a masseuse, sings, and plays the guitar, often performing her original songs at Central Perk—and of course, Smelly Cat is her biggest hit! 🎶

Fun fact: Lisa Kudrow won an Emmy for her performance as Ursula, Phoebe’s twin sister. Although Phoebe is a main character, Lisa won the award for Best Supporting Actress—crazy, right?

Joey Tribbiani

Matt LeBlanc brings Joey Tribbiani to life. A ladies’ man and struggling actor, Joey is of Italian descent and rarely finds success in acting.

He shares an apartment with Chandler, who constantly supports him financially, even paying for Joey’s acting classes to help him land better roles.

Joey has some of the most iconic moments in the series, and of course, his famous pickup line, “How you doin’?”, is legendary—it’s even available as a sticker here at Nerd Stickers! 😆

He was voted the most popular character of the series, which led to him getting his own spin-off show, Joey.

Rachel Green

Jennifer Aniston plays Rachel Green, who made headlines when she joined Instagram and posted a selfie with the entire Friends cast, making it one of the top 10 most-liked photos on Instagram.

Rachel starts the series running away from her wedding and moves in with Monica. She then begins working as a waitress at Central Perk, before eventually building a successful career in fashion.

She falls in love with Ross, and their relationship is complicated throughout the series. Despite being spoiled, Rachel matures over time, learning about responsibility from her friends and life experiences.

She even accidentally marries Ross in Las Vegas (sure, accidentally! 🙄), and the two later have a daughter together, Emma Green Geller.
