We’re living in the golden age of superheroes in cinema. In 2019 alone, there were seven major releases in the genre. And the pace shows no signs of slowing down—especially with a brand-new Batman movie on the way.
The Batman is still in the early stages of development, but it will mark the return of the Dark Knight to solo films after the mixed reception of Ben Affleck’s portrayal in Batman v Superman and Justice League.
So what can we expect from this new project? Will it be a big win for Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment, or another misstep? Here’s everything we know so far!
What Has Happened with Batman in Cinema So Far?
Before diving into the upcoming movie, it’s worth reviewing the character’s journey on the big screen—and let’s just say, it hasn’t always been smooth.
Beyond two early serials and a 1960s TV-based film, Batman has appeared in ten major motion pictures. Of those, only Tim Burton’s films and Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy received widespread praise from critics and audiences alike. Clearly, the Caped Crusader has faced some struggles in film history.
What to Expect from the New Batman Movie?
Set for release in 2021, the new Batman movie still feels far off. But that doesn’t stop us from speculating! Here’s what we know so far:
Production
Originally, the film was supposed to be written, directed, produced, and starred in by Ben Affleck, who played Batman in the most recent Warner Bros. films. However, the project fell apart due to several factors, including the underwhelming box office results of Justice League and Affleck’s personal issues, which led to a stay in rehab.
Affleck was eventually replaced by Matt Reeves, who initially left the project due to creative differences but later returned after reaching a new agreement with Warner.
Plot
So far, the plot is still under wraps. Matt Reeves started from scratch and said the story will focus on Batman’s detective side, with a noir-style approach.
Rumors suggest the film will feature six villains, including The Riddler, Penguin, Deathstroke, and Catwoman.
Cast
At the moment, only one actor is officially confirmed: Robert Pattinson will take on the role of Batman.
There’s speculation that Jeremy Irons may return as Alfred, and Joe Manganiello could reprise his role as Deathstroke.
Rumored names for Catwoman include Chloe Moretz and Vanessa Kirby, while James McAvoy has publicly stated his interest in playing the Riddler. As for Penguin, names like Josh Gad, Andy Serkis, Jonah Hill, and Paul Walter Hauser have been tossed around.
What to Watch While You Wait?
Filming is set to begin in late 2019, which means it’ll be a while before The Batman hits theaters. In the meantime, here are some films to check out while you wait:
Matt Reeves’ Films
To get a sense of what the new Batman might look like, watch some of Matt Reeves’ previous work. He directed the recent Planet of the Apes trilogy, Cloverfield, and Let Me In.
Good Time
According to Reeves, he wrote the Batman script with Robert Pattinson in mind after watching Good Time (2017). So why not watch the movie that convinced the director to cast him?
Joker
Of course, we can’t leave out Joker—a film starring Batman’s most iconic villain. Especially now, with rumors swirling that The Batman and Joker may be interconnected.
As you can see, not much has been revealed about The Batman, but there’s already enough to get excited about this project.
